Four walls, four screens, a dark room, you… The images and the videos project you into different places in the town of Taipei (Taiwan) as if you were there. The camera becomes your eyes. The lay-out of the space is such that 2D vision is transformed through 360°.
A pioneer of video art in Taiwan, Yuan Goang-Ming manipulates images in order to reflect the changing nature of human experience in a world saturated by technology. Combining metaphors and new media the artist provokes a meeting between the reality of the contemporary world and spiritual forces.
Before Memory is an installation filmed at the residence of the artist in an abandoned block of flats in Taipei in 2004. Yuan Goang-Ming shows the desolation, the chaos and the absence of people that characterizes this zone, observed through the broken windows of the tower block. The latter has been implanted near new modern dwellings, in a quarter undergoing total refurbishment.
An immersive experience, a succession of luminous flashes and darkness, the work articulates explorations of the senses and of memories so as to create bridges between past and present.
