Related to the octopuses, but with a shell, the ammonites experienced evolutionary success during the Mesozoic Era, which resulted in a large number of species of very varied sizes and appearances. Along with three quarters of marine animals, they disappeared during the mass extinction that occurred 66 million years ago. This biodiversity crisis was probably caused by the combined effects of several events: the impact of a huge meteorite and volcanic eruptions on an exceptional scale, preceded by a significant fall in sea levels.
