The shield is the visible barrier between groups facing each other in battle. Warrior's protection, trophy, ceremonial object and work of art, it symbolises boundaries to be strengthened or crossed. It reveals the ways in which societies see each other, caught between fear and respect, exaltation of identities and commodification of exoticism. This longitudinal shield made of plaited plant fibres is generally attributed to the Mongo group.
