In Kunwinjku (an Aboriginal language), yawk yawk means ‘young woman' and ‘young spiritual being'. Stories from Arnhem Land tell how these “young women” were swallowed by the Rainbow Serpent and spat out again in the form of water spirits. With long hair, like long strings of algae, they live in the streams and rocky pools of Western Arnhem Land, well away from humans. Sometimes compared with the European notion of sirens, yawk yawks are generally depicted with a fish's tail.
