Block of siderite (iron carbonate) with rhombohedral crystals showing flaky surfaces. Combined with transparent, colourless quartz sticks.
The discovery of iron smelting, around 1500 before the Common Era, had major effects on military and agricultural activities. Iron has been the most used metal since the Middle Ages and has enabled numerous industrial developments, in particular when combined with carbon to produce cast iron and steel.
