Monazite (phosphate) contains many rare-earth elements, including cerium, lanthanum, niobium and thorium.
The rare-earth elements are a group of seventeen metals with similar properties. Their production, which is costly and polluting, is currently concentrated in China. Niobium and tantalum, in particular, are used in high-tech electronics applications, making them of strategic importance.
